Operation Safe Stop Targets School Bus Violations

Law enforcement agencies across Michigan are participating in “Operation Safe Stop”, an initiative during School Bus Safety Week (October 21-25) to prevent drivers from illegally passing school buses. In 2023, there were 988 crashes involving school buses in Michigan, with 31 injuries at bus stops. Law enforcement will work with schools to increase education and enforcement. Drivers face fines of up to $500 for passing stopped buses, and penalties increase if injuries or fatalities occur.
